ABOUT

Gérard Stricher works within a vibrant world of color and abstraction, creating compositions that resist categorization. His dynamic use of color drives his artistic narrative, inviting unexpected juxtapositions and novel harmonies that emerge spontaneously from the palette.

While some may describe his work as abstract, Stricher himself rejects this label. He approaches each canvas as an extension of a living being, intimately connected to nature. The resulting images are guided by instinct and unconscious impulses, capturing moments of raw emotional expression.

Stricher’s practice is deeply informed by his fascination with the School of CoBrA painters, including Appel, Lindström, and Jorn. Their exploration of color and materiality inspired his own investigations into the potency of pure color. Yet his paintings are rarely planned in advance; they emerge organically from immediate emotion and instinctive gestures.

“My gestures in the act of painting do not follow the inputs of the brain. Often my hand makes movements that rationality does not command. It is the great mystery, the journey into the unknown...”
