ABOUT

Jean-Michel Lenoir’s celebrated minimalist photographs are set in dialogue with the abstract landscape paintings of Paul Hughes in this exhibition, creating a poetic exploration of the emotional resonance of natural environments. Through their distinct practices, each artist engages with the landscape in a way that transcends representation, inviting viewers to experience the elemental forces of nature rather than simply observe its physical features.

Lenoir’s photography captures subtle textures, light, and tonal variations, distilling the essence of the environment into contemplative, meditative compositions. Hughes’ abstract paintings, by contrast, evoke the energy and movement of the landscape through color, form, and gestural mark-making. Together, the works create a dynamic interplay between stillness and motion, absence and presence, rendering the invisible qualities of the natural world palpable.

This exhibition does not present defined landmarks or picturesque vistas; instead, it draws viewers into a sensory engagement with wind, water, rain, and clouds, encouraging a personal and immersive encounter with the raw emotional power of nature. The dialogue between Lenoir and Hughes allows us to feel the landscapes, to inhabit them in spirit, and to connect with their atmospheres on an intuitive level, resulting in a uniquely contemplative experience.
