DAFNA TAL

My creative process is an expression of my profound curiosity towards the human consciousness. I am intrigued by the intrinsic processes that shape our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions, ultimately guiding human behavior and molding individual and collective destinies. Inspired by my documentary studies at ICP in New York, my art blends documentary principles with contemporary and conceptual art. I employ diverse methodologies such as in-situ experiments, participatory art, documentation, and staged processes and craft my narratives using video, installation, photography, sculpture and sound. Through the act of artistic creation, I embark on a transformative journey, translating intangible inner realms into tangible forms of expression. In this process, enigmatic inner worlds are brought to life, offering viewers new pathways to discovery.
BIOGRAPHY
Dafna Tal is a multidisciplinary artist working in video, photography, and installation. Her work examines inner mechanisms of the human psyche—thoughts, emotions, and perceptions that drive human behavior and shape collective reality.
Tal works across changing locations with different communities and natural environments, approaching them as living fields for visual investigations of perception, emotion, and sensory experience, and as spaces that reflect and embody patterns of thought and feeling.
Her practice unfolds at the intersection of contemporary art and documentary principles, combining initiated situations with close attention to how events develop on their own. What emerges in real time becomes a central material in her process, and she is drawn to the ways people and natural conditions reveal themselves and actively shape the work within the situations she creates or enters.
Selected works include: You’re Gorgeous, You’re Mad — a video experiment connecting opposing aspects of self-perception; You Don’t Have To Do a Thing — video portraits documenting participants’ reactions to the sounds of religious prayers; and The Invisible Whole — a mirror and light installation that reveals a shifting external appearance of the viewer every few seconds.
Tal studied theatre and sculpture, and later photography at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. She holds a European Diploma in Cultural Project Management from the Association Marcel Hicter in Belgium. Her works have been exhibited internationally at institutions and festivals including the Casula Powerhouse Arts Center (Sydney), Lagos Photo Festival (Nigeria), and Visa pour l’Image (Perpignan, France).
