Sylvie Mangaud is a French sculptor whose work explores the elegance of movement through stylized representations of the human figure and the animal world. After studying graphology and morphology, she developed a deep fascination with body language, gesture, and expression — interests that became central to her artistic practice. Before turning to sculpture in the 1990s, Mangaud worked as a photographer, where she learned to capture fleeting moments, emotions, and the subtle dynamics of movement. This sensitivity to observation continues to shape her sculptural language today.

Working primarily in bronze, Mangaud creates elongated and intentionally disproportionate figures that balance strength with delicacy. Her sculptures are defined by slender silhouettes, extended limbs, and smooth, understated faces that allow posture and gesture to convey emotion. Focusing largely on female nudes and animals, her works capture natural movement with lightness, elegance, and finesse. Some figures appear ready to leap or dive, while others walk with quiet grace and verticality, suspended in moments that feel both timeless and alive.

Poetic, playful, and at times subtly ironic, Mangaud’s sculptures invite viewers to observe the body and its proportions more carefully. Her intentional distortions create harmony rather than imbalance, combining infinite lines with soft curves to evoke sensuality without immodesty. Her animal sculptures similarly reflect a fascination with nature’s grandeur and gracefulness, rendered with the same fluidity and restraint that characterize her human forms.

Negative space also plays an important role in Mangaud’s work. By integrating openness and geometric balance into her compositions, she creates sculptures that feel both fluid and architectural. The purity of her lines and the softness of her forms give her bronzes an aerial quality, while their calm presence reflects themes of freedom, balance, and harmony. Across her practice, Sylvie Mangaud transforms careful observation into poetic form, creating works that resonate across generations through their timeless elegance and emotional subtlety.
